Unique and

impressive

The Roman bath ruins in Baden-Baden are among the best preserved and most impressive Roman bath complexes in Baden-Württemberg. This "balineum" (hygienic bath) shows a unique state of preservation of the underfloor heating (hypocaustum) with the associated wall heating system made of hollow bricks (tubuli).

Presumably completed in the 70s AD. AD, the hygienic bath was available to the population. The heating system was operated with hot air. This was generated by fires in the stoking channels (praefurnia) of the heating rooms and fed into the cavity between the lower and upper floors (hypocausis). One such heating room is almost completely preserved on the north side of the complex. The Roman bath ruins were discovered and uncovered during the construction of the Friedrichsbad in the 19th century.
